The Cowboys‘ backup quarterback job is up for grabs, with Joe Milton and the recently signed Sam Howell set to battle for it in training camp. Could Carson Beck also become an option?

ESPN’s Ben Solak has the Cowboys taking the Miami signal caller in the fifth round of the NFL draft in his latest quarterback mock draft. Beck threw for 3,813 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while leading the Hurricanes to the national championship last season.

The Cowboys don’t necessarily have to bring another quarterback into the fold, but with three fifth-round picks available, they could take a chance on an experienced one in the right spot. Solak recognized that Beck has some limitations as a passer, particularly his arm talent, but that he “throws with enough anticipation to pull receivers away from coverage when working between the numbers.”

Solak also sees some similarities between Beck and Dak Prescott, as both have the ability to dissect defenses when protected well.

“Beck is very much a rhythm/confidence thrower who lets his mistakes compound, but he can also get into a pocket and throw with NFL timing and zip,” Solak wrote. “This is a trait he shares with Prescott, who looks like the league’s best quarterback when he’s hot in the pocket.”

The Cowboys have picks 12, 20, 92, 112, 152, 177, 180 and 218 in the draft. They have a variety of needs to address, but if Beck falls into their lap, he could be competing for the QB2 job soon.
