Apologies in advance to all of our wallets.

Here in Texas, the current average costs of a regular gallon and a diesel gallon land at $3.77 and $5.11, respectively. On the price jump front, the Lone Star State is ranked as the fifth hardest-hit state in the nation for the crippling rise in costs, with regular gas prices hiked up 36.1% year over year and a staggering 60.9% increase in diesel costs compared to last April.

It’s a cost trend prevalent throughout the South, with the entire Top 5 states in SmartAsset’s analysis heralding from that region. Arizona claimed the No. 1 price change spot given its whopping 37.8% year-over-year increase in regular gallon prices and 68.8% surge in diesel costs. Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee rounded out the Top 5, with Kentucky (No. 6), New Jersey (No. 7), North Carolina (No. 8), South Carolina (No. 9) and Alabama (No. 10) completing the Top 10.

When analyzing the sheer cost of gas, California unsurprisingly was named the unlucky winner, with a regular gallon purchased in April costing an average of $5.89 and diesel amounting to $7.52 per gallon. While Texas’ percent increase in gas costs is among the worst in the U.S., the Lone Star State remains one of the more affordable states by comparison, ranking No. 35 overall for its average price points.
