Pour one up to Anvil Bar & Refuge. The sister concepts in Montrose have just secured a No. 2 spot on Food & Wine‘s new list of “The Top 10 US Bars“. Continue below for more details.
Earlier this week, Food & Wine released its list of the “The Top 10 US Bars, According to the Experts”. In compiling its list, the publication polled over 400 experts in the industry – ranging from chefs to food and travel writers. The publication then submitted those results to their Global Advisory Board, who finalized the rankings in each category.
As you might expect, the list features bars in more high-profile cities like New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles. However, cities likes St. Louis, Tucson, and San Juan, Puerto Rico also got a shine on the list.

Ranked as the second best bar in the United States is Houston’s own Anvil Bar & Refuge. Located in Montrose, the bars are sister concepts from hospitality dynamo, Bobby Huegel – the mastermind behind Better Luck Tomorrow, Squable, and Theodore Rex.
While Heugel opened Anvil a decade ago, Refuge is a relative newcomer. Opened in 2022, Refuge is located up the stairs from the OG Anvil building. A couple years later, Esquire called Refuge one of the best bars in America.
Here’ s what Food & Wine had to say about Anvil Bar & Refuge:
