Starting salaries will rise to $64,000, or $66,000 for teachers with a master’s degree
Plano ISD is increasing starting teacher salaries and issuing across-the-board raises as part of its newly approved 2026–2027 compensation plan. With the boost, the district hopes to strengthen recruitment and retention across the district’s workforce. The plan was approved during the April 7 Board of Trustees meeting.
Higher Starting Pay And Districtwide Raises
Under the new plan, starting teacher salaries will rise to $64,000, or $66,000 for teachers with a master’s degree. Eligible employees will also receive at least a 2% raise, along with a $330 monthly contribution toward healthcare benefits.
The district is also continuing targeted market adjustments based on Texas Association of School Boards analysis, along with low-cost childcare and after-school care options for employees.
“Last year, our board made an unprecedented investment in our staff, and tonight’s action continues that progress in a careful, thoughtful way,” said Plano ISD Superintendent Dr. Theresa Williams in an official statement. “These adjustments come at a time when school districts across Texas are navigating ongoing funding challenges, yet Plano ISD remains focused on keeping compensation competitive and honoring the commitment of our employees. The plan reflects both responsible stewardship of resources and deep appreciation for the work they do for students and families.”
A Focus On Retention And Pay Structure
District leaders also pointed to ongoing efforts to adjust the long-term pay structure and reduce compression between new and veteran teachers. In 2025–2026, returning teachers received an average 6.92% raise, while other staff received 3%, alongside millions in additional investment beyond state retention allotments.
“Plano ISD has a long history of valuing and investing in our employees,” said Board President Dr. Lauren Tyra. “Our goal is to keep compensation competitive and sustainable so we can continue to recruit and retain talented professionals in every role. We know there is no way to fully pay our staff what they are truly worth, but this plan reflects our ongoing commitment to honor their work and to keep Plano ISD a destination district.”
Budget Pressures And Funding Balance
The district estimates the plan will include about $7.43 million for raises, $500,000 for market adjustments and $1.5 million for staffing changes tied to program needs. Those costs are partially offset by roughly $7 million in projected payroll savings from attrition and staffing efficiencies tied to enrollment trends.
Despite financial constraints, district leaders said spreading compensation increases across all employees remains a priority in order to ensure broad-based support while still recognizing experience and certification levels.
