EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 26-year-old man accused of fleeing to Mexico after running from authorities was arrested on Wednesday when he crossed the border bridge to come back to El Paso.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Axel Hernandez was arrested after he was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the Ysleta Port of Entry/ Zaragoza border bridge, as he had a warrant for reportedly fleeing from deputies after they pulled him over for speeding.
The Sheriff’s Office said Hernandez was driving a gray Nissan Altima when he was pulled over on April 4 at around 3:13 a.m. at the 13100 block of Eastlake Boulevard, near Eastlake High School.
As the deputy was approaching the Altima, the Sheriff’s said Hernandez sped off, ignoring traffic signs, turning off the vehicle’s lights and driving recklessly.
The Sheriff said the deputy, having a clear description of the driver and a clear look at the Altima’s license plates, did not pursue the Altima to not put the public in danger.
After an investigation, the Sheriff’s office found the Altima and learned that Hernandez had fled to Mexico.
