On April 10, the Dallas Police Department honored a fallen officer with a ceremonial street topper in the 4900 block of Wadsworth Drive.

The department recapped the event in a Friday afternoon social media post. According to the post, Smith was a member of the Gang Unit searching for a suspect in the 4900 block of Wadsworth Dr. on Jan. 6, 2009.

As Smith knocked on the front door, the suspect fired several shots that struck and killed Smith.

Smith served as an officer for 18 years, receiving numerous awards and accolades during his tenure. Those accolades include 93 commendations and being named the Texas Gang Investigators Association Officer of the Year in 2006.

He also served in the United States Marine Corps, earning the Navy Achievement Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Meritorious MAST. And he was a devoted husband, father, and son.

Members of the command staff and the department, along with members of Smith’s family gathered together for the unveiling.

A week earlier, the department honored fallen officer Senior Corporal Richard A. Lawrence with a ceremonial street topper at 8383 La Prada Dr.

Lawrence was patrolling an apartment complex on Nov. 9, 1993, when he discovered two individuals attempting to steal a truck. A gun fight ensued, and Lawrence died from injuries sustained during the incident.

A dedicated public servant, Lawrence was also highly decorated with over 100 commendations and two lifesaving awards during his career.

Dallas Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux was in attendance along with members of the command staff, the department, and members of Lawrence’s family.
