A man is dead after a traffic stop led to a fight in north Houston early Saturday morning, police say.

HOUSTON — An investigation is underway after police say a sergeant shot and killed a man in his 20s or 30s during a traffic stop in north Houston early Saturday morning.

This happened around 1:30 a.m. on Airline Drive near Tidwell Road.

The Houston Police Department said the incident started as a traffic stop. The sergeant reportedly pulled the man over into a parking lot and attempted to detain the suspect.

As the sergeant tried to detain the man, police said the man started to fight.

“Both the suspect and the sergeant fell to the ground, suspect continued to fight the sergeant. Sergeant’s weapon was discharged, suspect ran from the scene,” said HPD Assistant Chief Cantu.

Officers reportedly found the man nearby with several gunshot wounds and began administering first aid. The man was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

HPD said the sergeant sustained minor injuries and is expected to recover.

The shooting is under investigation by HPD’s Special Investigative Unit, as well as the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
