EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — Just days after celebrating his gallery’s 30th anniversary, El Paso artist Hal Marcus has passed away at 74 years old.
Marcus, a beloved figure in the Borderland arts community, spent decades capturing the culture and color of the El Paso-Juárez region while building the Hal Marcus Gallery into a cornerstone for local artists and art lovers.
His death comes months after he spoke openly about a cancer diagnosis that he said had given him a renewed sense of purpose. At the time, Marcus said he was “preparing for going on a long journey,” while continuing to create art nearly every day.

The month of April marked the Hal Marcus Gallery’s 30th anniversary, a milestone that he took much pride in.
“Thirty years ago, I wanted to create a space that felt like home for the community’s imagination,” Hal Marcus said. “Seeing the gallery become a place where people connect with our culture through color has been the greatest masterpiece of my life.

In an interview with KFOX14/CBS4 just four days before his passing, Marcus reflected on that legacy, surrounded by the art and community he helped build.
“I wanted to let people know what I am going through. I’ve done a good job, so I feel my work coming to an end.” Marcus said.
Friends, family, and supporters say his impact extended far beyond his work, shaping the Borderland’s artistic identity and inspiring generations of artists to follow their passion.
Marcus often encouraged others to “do what you love,” a message he continued to share even in the final chapter of his life.
In that final interview, he ended with a simple goodbye.
Adios, amigos.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made towards the establishment of the Hal Marcus Art Museum at 1319 North Oregon, scheduled to open late 2027. To donate, visit SunsetParlor.com
