The new remodel includes more equipment, upgraded living quarters and a dedicated storm shelter for the 1983 firehouse.
Plano Fire‑Rescue celebrated the grand reopening of Fire Station 5, located at 5115 W. Park Blvd., on Oct. 22, following a $12 million renovation and expansion underwritten by the 2021 bond referendum.
A Station Re-Built for Growth
Since first opening in 1983, Station 5 has served Plano residents through four decades of growth. To keep pace with rising demand and modern emergency services expectations, the city nearly doubled the building’s footprint – from 7,200 square feet to 14,000 square feet.
The additional space enables Plano Fire-Rescue to:
House more emergency vehicles and equipment, including a new medical unit (ambulance) and a hazardous-materials truck & trailer.
Offer upgraded living quarters for crews, including more beds and improved rest spaces tailored for long shifts.
Incorporate a dedicated storm shelter and expanded parking areas for staff and public visitors.
Why It Matters
As Plano continues to grow in population and complexity, having a purpose-built emergency services infrastructure matters.
Fire Chief Chris Biggerstaff noted that adding space to store haz-mat equipment and consolidating apparatus under one roof were major drivers for the project.
“It’s basically a brand-new station,” he said.
Improved crew accommodations also play a role in readiness and welfare. Biggerstaff explained that when one unit is called out, “Truck five doesn’t get woken up … that’s a game-changer whenever you’re trying to get as much rest as you possibly can.”
