UPDATE
Splendid Aviation, the flight school involved in Monday’s crash near Corpus Christi International Airport, provided an update Tuesday morning on the condition of the two people injured.
In a Facebook post, the company said the instructor and student on board the training aircraft have both been transported to San Antonio for specialized medical care.
The company also asked for continued prayers and privacy for the victims and their families. No other details have been released.

ORIGINAL STORY
Two people were critically injured after a small general aviation aircraft crashed Monday near Corpus Christi International Airport, according to Corpus Christi Fire Department Assistant Chief Tony Perez.
The crash happened along the Highway 44 access road adjacent to the airport as the plane was approaching the runway, Perez said.
Both occupants were transported to Spohn Shoreline Hospital in critical condition with severe burns, according to Perez.
The aircraft caught fire after the crash, but crews were able to extinguish the flames, Perez said.
No injuries were reported among first responders.
Nearby railroad tracks were temporarily shut down as crews worked the scene. Downed power lines were also reported in the area, and AEP crews were working to secure them before officials could safely assess and reopen the tracks, according to Perez.
According to AEP, 27 customers are without power in the area.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and are expected to investigate the crash, Perez said.
CCPD has released a traffic advisory for Highway 44 west bound near Clarkwood. Avoid the area if possible.
