EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A 16-year-old male juvenile was taken into custody following a shots fired incident Monday, April 13 at Jim Crouch Park, according to El Paso police.
El Paso police responded around 1 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 7500 block of W. H. Burges. The case was later assigned to the department’s Gang Unit for further investigation.
The shooting caused concerned parents and guardians to take their children out of school nearby at Burges High School amid the lockdown. On Monday, El Paso Independent School District officials told KTSM 9 News the lockdown was later lifted and placed under “hold.”
Police investigating ‘shots fired’ call at East El Paso Park
Preliminary findings showed that a large fight broke out at the park prior to the gunfire. Investigators said one individual left the scene briefly, retrieved a firearm from a nearby vehicle, and then returned to discharge multiple rounds into the air. No injuries were reported.
An investigation conducted by EPPD’s Gang Unit detectives identified those involved and determined that a 16-year-old male was responsible for firing the weapon. The juvenile was taken into custody without incident and has been charged with discharge of a firearm in certain municipalities.
Authorities said the teen was referred to the Juvenile Probation Department. The investigation remains ongoing.
