EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Two hospitals in El Paso made appreciation baskets to gift to the police and fire departments on Tuesday as part of First Responder Day.

KFOX14/CBS4 was there when representatives from the University Medical Center of El Paso and the El Paso Children’s Hospital visited the El Paso Fire Department’s Fire Station 5 and the El Paso Police Department headquarters in Central to give officers and firefighters gift baskets as a way to honor them on First Responder Day.

“They bring in patients to us,” said Don Janes, the EMS outreach coordinator for UMC. “The law enforcement is always there for us and the community. We feel that it’s greatly needed and is appreciated.”

“For us, it’s extremely important to continue to build these relationships so that we can all take better care of the children in El Paso,” said Naomi Bastardo, an associate administrator at El Paso Children’s Hospital. “…[First responders] go through so much. So this small token of appreciation, I hope, goes a long way for them and makes them realize how we’re all together, we’re one team here to help support each other.”
