EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — Drivers along Socorro Road who have been dealing with construction delays now have a clearer timeline for when the work will wrap up — and what crews are doing in the first place.

A viewer reached out with concerns that the work is affecting their commute.

The viewer asked, “Why are crews out there, what are they doing, and when will it end?” and questioned why they didn’t get a heads-up.

The Texas Department of Transportation said the work is “a safety improvement project that consists of placing sidewalks, new signals, new electrical boxes and lighting, new striping, landscaping, mailboxes, and drainage,” officials said.

The project is focused on pedestrian safety, including creating a landscaped buffer for people to pass through and making walking along the road safer.

The project began in January, and most of the work is expected to be completed by the end of April or early May.

Other upgrades include adding flashing yellow arrows, which are intended to improve safety for turning vehicles.

Even after TxDOT crews finish, additional work is expected in the area.

Officials said El Paso Electric will also be out along the route working on electrical boxes through May.

The project is set to be fully completed by the end of the summer.
