Lubbock drivers made history on Thursday as the first section of Loop 88 officially opened to the public. It’s not a long stretch of road that opened but the stretch along 1585 marks a historic moment for the future of the area.
What was a 2-lane road has been transformed into a 6-lane freeway according to KAMC.
Phases 3A and 3B rebuilt FM 1585 (130th Street) from a two-lane road to a six-lane freeway with frontage roads, bridges and ramps. These were the first of seven phases in building the first part of Loop 88, Segment 3, which spans from I-27 to U.S. 62/82 in Wolfforth.
Phase 3C, the I-27 interchange will be accepting bids this summer.
Construction began on Loop 88 in 2021 and the speed limit is 65 mph.
