Texas high school baseball is among the best in the nation.

According to Baseball America’s latest Top 50 High School Baseball Team Rankings, which are determined by selected representatives from the national High School Baseball Coaches Association, Tomball High School and Grapevine High School are the No. 2 and No. 8 baseball programs nationally. Four more Texas teams rounded out the top 50, including: No. 18 North Paulding, No. 20 Atascocita, No. 27 Keller and No. 30 Corpus Christi Calallen.

Tomball and Grapevine stand out, as they are at the center of talent in different regions of the state and have made back-to-back state championship appearances in some of the University Interscholastic League’s most competitive classifications.

Tomball’s program is built on consistency under head coach Doug Rush, who has led the team since 2011. The Cougars are a regular perennial contender in the state playoffs every year and have won two state championships, including their first in Class 4A in 2013. More recently, the Cougars won the Class 6A Division II state title in 2024, with Texas Gatorade Player of the Year Award-winning Cade Arrambide in tow. The team returned to the state championship game last season, where it lost to Kingwood High School.

In addition to the school’s ranking, Baseball America lists two players from the Cougars among the top 50 in the state: No. 15 CJ Sampson (third base/outfielder) and No. 41 Catcher Hopkins (catcher). Both are committed to play for Texas A&M next year, unless selected high enough in the MLB Draft.

Grapevine beat Tomball to the punch on winning back-to-back state championships under head baseball Jimmy Webster, making history as the first program to do so since Brenham won three straight across the 1986-1988 seasons in Class 4A. Webster has over 30 years of coaching experience, including 19 years of head coaching experience across the state at Permian, Plainview, Lubbock Coronado and Denton High Schools.

But he saw instant success when he took over as head coach at Grapevine in 2024. The school won back-to-back Class 5A Division II state championships in 2024 and 2025. Now, the community hopes the team can rally behind that “Mustang Magic” for a third year in a row.

Grapevine has three players in the top 100, including the No. 10 player in the nation, Javorskie Lane Jr., a catcher and outfielder committed to the University of Arkansas.  Others include: No. 75 catcher Gianni Corral, a catcher committed to play for Weatherford Community College, as well as No. 80 catcher Nomar Torres, who will play for Northwest Florida Junior College. Junior Luke Esquivel, a first baseman, left-handed pitcher and outfielder, is also already committed to LSU

With two top-10 programs and four more in the top 50, the UIL State Championships will be a sight for some of the nation’s best rising talent. Playoffs begin May 2, while the state championship tournament will begin on June 4 at Dell Diamond.
