Major weekend highway closures in San Antonio will start within hours. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will shut down a few stretches of Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 (I-10) beginning on Friday, April 17, at 9 p.m. Closures will continue nightly through 5 a.m. on Monday, April 20, weather permitting, according to a press release. These are the first round of segments that are listed to close, per the announcement.
Traffic may become congested as the city’s annual 11-day celebration, which takes up a significant part of downtown, began on Thursday, April 16. Market Square’s Fiesta De Los Reyes, which hosts live music, food, and other activities, commences Friday. A reported 2.5 million people attend over the nearly two-week period.
During the daylight hours, two other shutdowns will be active. These will close from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, according to the agency.
TxDOT says the closures are required for bridge construction. The tasks are part of the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, a $1.4 billion initiative aimed at increasing safety and flow along the corridor. Folks should expect to see law enforcement near the sites and adhere to posted signage.
To navigate these routes in the daytime, there are a few detours at your disposal. The agency recommends taking the following detours.
