A Texas grocery store has officially shuttered another one of its stores in Houston in less than a year. Randalls’ supermarket at 5161 San Felipe St. has closed for good, capping off a departure that was announced in February.Â
Albertsons, the parent company of Randalls, previously confirmed that the store would close on or before April 18, after its pharmacy shut down on March 4.Â
“Based on the timing of the lease renewal for this location and the proximity of nearby company stores, the decision was made to close this location,” Christy Lara, Albertsons PR director for Texas and Louisiana, told Chron at the time. “In such a competitive environment, our company must sometimes make the tough decision to close a store so that we can reinvest in our remaining stores in the marketplace.”
Since then, the Uptown location has undergone a weeks-long wind-down, marked by dwindling stock and final sales. Houston shoppers were hit with this same supermarket loss last summer when the Randalls supermarket at West Bellfort Avenue near the 610 Loop closed. According to the Houston Chronicle, it was underperforming store so Albertons made the “tough decision” to reinvest in its other nearby locations.
Now, the Houston-based grocery store, which opened in 1966, only has eight remaining locations in the city and a total of 25 across the entire state.
Chron has reached out to Albertons about whether any additional stores in the area are at risk. We will update this story if and when we hear back.
