A day after disaster, evidence of attempts to save a life marked the site of a fatal crash on North Collett Avenue near the intersection of Swiss Avenue in Dallas.
Thursday, Dallas Police arrested 25-year-old Tyrell Jones, charging him with murder and robbery after they say he collided with and killed a pedestrian on North Collett Avenue near Swiss while fleeing a carjacking.
It all started a few blocks away.
Surveillance video shows Jones running through the street around 5:20 p-m.
He stumbles, lying out in the middle of the road.
About a minute later, a driver in a purple Kia Sorrento slows to ask if he’s ok.
Jones is seen jumping onto her car and then falling off.
Seconds later, neighbors at the intersection of Reiger and Colett say they heard a horn honking and a woman screaming.
According to an affidavit, Jones struggled with the driver.
She eventually got out, fearing for her life, and he sped off.
Witnesses said he bounced from curb to curb as he drove away.
As neighbors called 911, the affidavit said Jones was driving in the wrong lane of traffic.
He collided head-on with a driver stopped at a stop sign.
The impact pushed both the Kia and Toyota back about 100 feet and onto a sidewalk, pinning Jose Avila to a tree.
Despite attempts to save him, Avila died at a nearby hospital.
Friday night, Jones remained behind bars.
