Pablo Alvarez is returning to the UIL state tennis tournament, but this time it will be a little sweeter.

That’s because he’s going there with a friend.

The Reagan junior, who went to state last year in singles, won the UIL 6A Region 4 boys double titles with sophomore Rodrigo Montano on Saturday afternoon at the Blossom Tennis Center.

“I qualified last year but to be back here playing doubles is just amazing (with) one of my really good friends just feels really good,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez and Montano defeated fellow Rattlers Jairo Kirk and Ryan Totorica in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 for the regional title. Since the top three finishers in each category advance to state, Kirk and Totorica will also be playing in next month’s state tournament.

“It’s definitely tough when you play your teammates, obviously your friends, but you just try to go out there, play your best and compete as fair and as best as you can,” Alvarez said.

While Alvarez has some experience playing in the state tournament under his belt, Montano will be making his first appearance at state.

“It feels good,” Montano said. “I’m hyped for it.”

Ahead of this season, Reagan tennis head coach Michael Canales thought Alvarez and Montano could be a balanced doubles pair.

“I think they complement each other,” Canales said. “Pablo has a great serve and Rodrigo has great returns. I think they have that mental capacity to beat any team in the state. I know the abilities they have. They trust each other, I trust them, and it just really pairs up for a great team.”

Reagan’s Evan and Iris Wang finished in second place in mixed open doubles, which also qualifies the pair for the state tournament.

“Getting to the regionals alone is tough,” Canales said. “I think my mixed (doubles pair) showed so much grit today, so much resilience against a strong one-seed from (Austin) Westwood.”

LEE’s Morgane Guillemard bested Brownsville Hanna’s Maria Carolina de Leon in three sets for third place in girls singles, securing her return to the state tournament for the second consecutive season. Last year, Guillemard and her girls doubles partner, Landry Johnson, became LEE’s first state tennis qualifiers since 1991.

Boerne’s Justin Barraza Hernandez and Paytin Johndrow also qualified for state in 5A Region 4 mixed doubles with a third-place finish.

The UIL state tennis tournament will be held in San Antonio from May 7-8. Matches will be held at Blossom, Annemarie Tennis Center and Northside Tennis Center.

“I think the goal you always have in the back of your head is to get away with winning the championship,” Alvarez said. “But (we’re) just trying to go out there, play every match with everything we have, and just try to do our best every match.”
