When you work in radio, you get trained to notice the small things—those everyday details most people overlook. And sometimes, those little things say a lot about how the world is changing.

When Small Change Reflects Big Change

Back in November of 2025, Walmart officially phased out pennies and began rounding purchases. On the surface, it sounds practical. Pennies are small, often ignored, and not exactly worth bending over for. But underneath that convenience is something that doesn’t sit quite right. For some people, those pennies still matter—literally. There are folks out there counting every cent just to make a purchase, and rounding can quietly work against them.

Most of us probably have a jar of pennies sitting somewhere. Maybe even a few dusty rolls we keep meaning to cash in. And sure, fifty cents in pennies doesn’t feel like much—but that’s easy to say when you’re not depending on it. There’s an old saying often attributed to Benjamin Franklin: “Watch the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.” Whether he actually said it or not, the idea still holds water.

Here’s the kicker—there’s no shortage of pennies. Roughly 114 billion of them are still in circulation. They don’t wear out easily, and every register drawer and machine in the country is already built to handle them. So when a major retailer moves away from pennies, it doesn’t feel like a necessity—it feels like a choice. And maybe not one that benefits everyone.

A Small Moment That Still Matters

That’s what made a simple moment last week stand out. At United Supermarkets, I got my change back from a machine—and it was exact. Pennies and all. No rounding. No shortcuts. Just the right amount.

It might seem like nothing, but it’s not. It’s a small sign of respect. Respect for your money, your budget, and the idea that every cent still counts. Honestly, they ought to put a little sign on those machines: “Because we know every penny matters.”

At some point, maybe pennies do fade away. But right now, they’re still here—and they’re still worth something. And for a lot of people, that something makes a difference.
