A steel treehouse composed of shipping containers near Lubbock scored as the most desired Airbnb in Texas.
That’s what’s driving people to Ransom Canyon, to stay at the three-story architectural art piece — listed on Airbnb as the Architectural Marvel: Robert Bruno Steel House — that ranks as the Lone Star State’s star Airbnb property.
The 2,200-square-foot complex comes with views of Lake Ransom Canyon and is a 20-minute drive from Lubbock. The futuristic-looking North Texas stay stands out with stained glass windows, intricate steelwork, comfy couches and vast views of the scenic landscapes that often feature deer and great-horned owls.
The three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom rental accommodates up to eight guests for a two-night minimum stay. But recent guests tell travelers that the house is more than just a place to sleep while on vacation — costing around $600 per night, according to Airbnb — but a chance to live within art.
“The Bruno house is not simply a place to stay on your travels; it is a destination all on its own,” a guest commented two weeks ago. “You will want to stay inside all day to see how sunlight, reflected through stained glass and curved windows, changes the interior landscape from moment to moment. This house is truly a marvel.”
The innovative style of the house was built and designed in 1973 by Robert Bruno, a sculptor and Texas Tech University professor. The house was not yet completed when Bruno, 63, died in 2008, CultureMap San Antonio reported.
Texas Monthly did extensive coverage on the house, reporting that Bruno’s daughter sold it for $250,000. A month later, the property was listed for $1.75 million, according to the magazine.
