The Texas Cavaliers River Parade was canceled on Monday, April 20, due to storms threatening San Antonio out of an abundance of caution. The cancellation comes as rain continues to plummet down the city, leaving the area under a Flash Flood Warning until 9 p.m.
The parade is a signature event of San Antonio’s Fiesta celebration, taking place annually on the first Monday of the festival along the downtown River Walk. The event features vibrant, decorated barges, music and thousands of spectators, with proceeds benefiting local children’s charities through the Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation. It was scheduled to start at 7 p.m.Â
“It is with deep disappointment that the Texas Cavaliers announce the cancellation of the 81st Annual River Parade. Out of an abundance of caution, the City of San Antonio has issued a cancellation order, and we must respect this decision,” the Texas Cavaliers wrote on Facebook. “The safety and well-being of our participants, guests, volunteers, and the broader community remains our highest priority.”
The post continued, “While every detail had been thoughtfully prepared and the event was ready to proceed, this decision is ultimately beyond our control. We are committed to adhering to all city directives and safety regulations.”
Despite this setback, Texas Cavaliers wrote that it is proud to share that this year’s efforts have successfully raised more than $3 million for children’s charities across our community. That impact will not be canceled, the organization wrote.
“Our mission to support and uplift the children of San Antonio continues, and we are grateful for the generosity and support that made this possible.
We appreciate the understanding of our community and look forward to celebrating together again next year,” the Texas Cavaliers added.
It wasn’t the only event canceled due to the weather. The Air Force Day at the Alamo was nixed, with no rescheduled date. The Fiesta De Los Reyes event at Market Square is also canceled due to the weather conditions.Â
An additional 2 to 4 inches of rain is possible through Monday night, which could lead to scattered instances of flash flooding, particularly over the Hill Country, I-35 corridor and Coastal Plains, according to the National Weather Service.Â
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office shared road closures due to flooding. Here are the following streets to avoid: Menger Drive in both directions and Fredericksburg Road in both directions.Â
Poss Road is also closed due to flooding, according to the City of Leon Valley.
The Texas Department of Transportation also stated the roadway on Bracken at FM 2252 is closed until water levels recede and the roadway is safe for travel.
