AUSTIN, Texas — Parents are urging Austin ISD to slow down and be more transparent on its proposed school consolidation plan. The proposal could lead to the closure of 13 schools and changes to 98% of school boundaries. District officials say the changes are necessary to better use resources and address a multi-million-dollar budget deficit. But parents say the proposal could cause longer commutes for families and increase safety risks. Austin ISD’s board of trustees is scheduled to vote on the proposed plan in less than a month.

Parents at Maplewood Elementary, which is one of the schools on the closure list, are hosting a concert Wednesday night to save the school. Parents say Maplewood is the only school on the closure list to receive an “A” accountability rating this year from the Texas Education Agency. Parents also argue the school has been a cornerstone of the Cherrywood neighborhood for 74 years. Superintendent Matias Segura is scheduled to visit Maplewood Wednesday morning as part of his tour of schools on the consolidation list.
