Game 1 between the Stars and Wild didn’t look like either team expected. But by about 15 minutes into Monday’s Game 2 at American Airlines Center, a single moment showed the most anticipated series of the first round had officially arrived.

Tied 1-1 late in the first period, Wild defenseman Zach Bogosian sent a puck up ice to forward Yakov Trenin — the NHL’s leader in hits — who was blindsided by a crushing check from Stars forward Colin Blackwell at the red line.

The 5-8 forward delivered a blow that left Trenin down on the ice for minutes, only to emerge with a bloody face shielded by a towel. He never returned.

At that point, the series also reached a point of no return.

“I can’t see it going back,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. “I think it’s just going to stay like this as we go forward. It’s probably gonna stay like this the whole time.”

The Stars claimed a 4-2 victory Monday night to even the series at 1-1 as it heads to Minnesota in a contest likely to foreshadow the remainder of the series. There wasn’t much room. There was tight checking. Special teams and goaltending were the difference.

It was playoff hockey in full swing.

Saturday’s Game 1 blowout didn’t look like a playoff game, no matter how you want to look at it. The Wild might say it did for them, as they cruised to a 6-1 victory and stole home-ice advantage from the Stars. But Dallas didn’t show up to play, and the physicality expected between the two teams was lacking.

It certainly wasn’t in Monday’s game. Besides the Blackwell hit, both teams exchanged physical plays and lived in the penalty box, especially in the second period, where nine penalties were called.

Two teams with some history between them often leads to a more combative series. That’s why this one could easily be decided by special teams.

Based on Game 1, that reality seemed to serve Minnesota better. The Wild had scored five power play goals in their final regular-season meeting and first playoff game against the Stars this season. Dallas’ penalty kill looked lost, with no answer for the Wild’s top players like Joel Eriksson Ek, Kirill Kaprizov and Quinn Hughes.

Maybe it was the absence of Mats Zuccarello — a forward on that top power play unit, who was a late scratch Monday due to an injury sustained in Game 1 — but the Wild weren’t as productive on the man-advantage. The Stars held them scoreless in four tries, including one after a too-many-men penalty with under four minutes left in regulation.

When the Stars got their chances on the power play, they capitalized. Matt Duchene put Dallas up 2-1 in the second period off a pass from Mikko Rantanen. Wyatt Johnston scored into an empty net while on the power play late in regulation. The Stars power play has goals in both of its playoff games, with Jason Robertson scoring in Game 1. 

The Stars’ power play was the second-best in the league at 28.6% this season. The Wild are well aware of how that factors into Dallas’ strategy.

“They’re looking to play 5-on-4,” Wild forward Marcus Foligno said. “I mean, that’s their game. They can’t hang with us 5-on-5.”

With the series now heading to Minnesota for Games 3 and 4, both teams will try to adjust after what they saw from their opponents in the two games at AAC. But Gulutzan says those adjustments will become fewer as the series progresses.

“What’s gonna happen is it’s gonna become a players’ series,” he said. “That’s what makes these series great.”

Two games in, it already feels like one. The temperature spiked fast from Game 1 to 2, with this series showing no early signs of cooling off.

“It’s gonna be hostile,” Robertson said. “It’s gonna be a long series.”
