A Fort Worth ISD assistant principal died after a shooting at a home in Benbrook last week, and another district employee has been charged with manslaughter, according to local authorities and the school district.
Benbrook police responded around 7:30 p.m. on April 17 to the 1000 block of Sproles Drive after receiving a report that someone had been accidentally shot in the face, per DFW Scanner. Officers arrived to find the individual unconscious with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
A medical examiner’s report identified the victim as 42-year-old Lindsay Velasquez, reported CBS News.
Authorities arrested her husband, 39-year-old Alberto Velasquez, at the scene and charged him with manslaughter. He remained in the Tarrant County Jail on a $35,000 bond as of April 21, according to Tarrant County jail records, per KRLD. No other injuries were reported at the time.
Fort Worth ISD confirmed that both Lindsay Velasquez and Alberto Velasquez were district employees. The district said, per CBS News, that “Fort Worth ISD is aware of a tragic off-campus incident involving two district employees. This situation did not occur on a Fort Worth ISD campus, and there is no ongoing threat to students or staff. We are deeply saddened by this loss, and our thoughts are with the family and all those impacted. Counselors and support staff are being made available to students and staff at impacted campuses.”
Lindsay Velasquez was listed on Luella Merrett Elementary School’s website as the school’s assistant principal and in her second year in the role. The school bio says she “works hard for our families, our teachers, and our students.”
Police have not publicly released additional details about what led to the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
