Graduation season in Plano Independent School District will look a little different this year. The district plans to introduce new software for announcing student names during ceremonies, a shift meant to improve pronunciation and consistency, but one that’s already sparking debate among some students.

A Tech Upgrade For A Milestone Moment

Plano ISD officials say the new system is designed to ensure each graduate’s name is delivered clearly and accurately as they walk the stage. The platform will also allow names to be displayed on-screen during the ceremony, something the district has not previously offered.

“Many colleges and universities use software programs like this and we believe both of these features will provide an enhancement to the graduation experience,” a spokesperson for Plano ISD told Local Profile. “This change responds to feedback from previous graduations and is being used for ceremonies at all three senior high schools and Academy High School.”

Students and families will be able to review and submit name pronunciations ahead of time, with campus staff still involved in the process.

“Students and families will have an opportunity to review, confirm and correct name pronunciations and campus staff will continue to support the process, including serving as backup announcers if needed,” the spokesperson said.

Students Question The Trade-Off

Not everyone is on board. For some seniors, the change raises questions about whether efficiency should take priority over tradition.

“There is such a distinct human factor to having somebody who knows you and contributed to your education say your name while you walk,” Avery Cousins, a senior at Plano Senior High, told WFAA.

Cousins started a petition calling for a return to live announcers, saying support from classmates came quickly after the effort began.

Thought with the May ceremonies quickly approaching, it may be too late for a change of plans. For Plano ISD, the goal is a smoother, more consistent experience. For students, though, the moment carries more than logistical weight, and how their name is called may matter just as much as hearing it at all.
