The Fort Worth Zoo announced Tuesday that its oldest complex, World of Primates, underwent renovations and now houses a new animal — a two-toed sloth.
The World of Primates originally opened in 1992 and is home to three of the zoo’s four great apes, a gorilla, an orangutan and a bonobo. The newest addition, Olive, comes after many requests for a sloth from zoo guests, the release said.
“We are always excited when there is an opportunity to introduce Fort Worth to a new animal at the Zoo. We’re excited to provide a home for [a sloth],” Michael Fouraker, the zoo’s executive director, said.
Olive is a part of the first phase of the complex’s reimagining, according to the release. Other changes include additional guest areas, animal habitats and behind-the-scenes staff workspaces.
Officials said the second phase construction will begin later this year, with planned improvements including doubling the size of the gorilla habitat and filling the gorilla moat and replacing the boardwalk and shade structures throughout the complex.
