Nueces County Coastal Parks officials say wet conditions halted concrete work.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Construction work on Bob Hall Pier has been delayed after recent rainfall, according to Scott Cross, Director of Nueces County Coastal Parks.
Cross said crews need dry conditions to apply a concrete compound designed to properly strengthen the structure. “The rain is what hurt them,” he said, explaining that moisture prevents the material from properly setting.

The work has now been pushed to Thursday, beginning at 5 a.m. and running through midnight.
Despite the delay, officials confirmed the pier will remain partially accessible. The T-head section will be closed during construction, along with the area near the fish cleaning station, but anglers will still be able to access the linear portion of the pier.
Cross said the work involves applying a compound that increases concrete strength from 4,000 PSI to 5,000 PSI. He noted that while PSI refers to “pounds per square inch,” the upgrade was recommended by engineers to support future infrastructure needs, including placement of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather station.
He said the new NOAA installation is currently in the bidding phase, with no deployment date set yet.
Cross also explained the design differences from the previous pier, noting that newer concrete panels are engineered to better withstand storm surge.
Unlike older heavy slabs that were often displaced during major storms such as Hurricane Hanna, the updated design allows sections to detach and move more safely during extreme conditions, reducing structural damage.
In addition to construction updates, Cross discussed broader coastal monitoring efforts and partnerships with researchers studying nearshore currents, tide behavior, and erosion patterns along the Texas coast.
He said improved real-time data helps officials make decisions about beach operations, safety, and resource management.
