LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Tonight, the Lubbock High Westerners have the chance to bring home the coveted “Silver Spurs” for the first time since 2007. On the other side is the Monterey Plainsmen, who will try to take care of business against their Hub City rivals to the north- just as they did with last week with their in-town rivals to the west, Coronado. Monterey head coach Jason Sims says this year’s new-look Westerner squad has given his players and coaches plenty of reasons to stay focused.
“You’re either getting better, or you’re getting worse, and so- every rep matters when you practice, so when you practice that way and prepare that way, it makes it almost impossible to overlook an opponent,” he said.
As for Lubbock High (1-4, 0-1), head coach Juan Rodriguez believes a victory is within reach, but they will need to play at a much-higher standard to beat Monterey (3-3, 1-1).
“Facing Monterey, I think they do an excellent job. They’ve got a great thing going, they’ve got a great program, they’re doing great things. They play a different level of ball that we’ve got to raise our game to, so that we can have a successful night”
Kickoff set for 7 p.m. You can catch the game on KCBD.com , KCBD YouTube, and on the KCBD Connected TV app.
