EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 28-year-old man who had led authorities in a high-speed chase that started in El Paso and ended in Anthony, New Mexico, has run-ins with the law before, according to an arrest affidavit for Miguel Angel Anchondo.

As previously reported by KTSM, Anchondo was charged on Friday, April 17, with evading arrest.

However, his court documents allege Anchondo has encountered authorities before when El Paso police were investigating a spree of burglaries and came across a red and black Nissan Cube that was involved.

El Paso police reported that on March 30, they located a suspected vehicle and tried pulling over the Nissan Cube at a Circle K located at 7660 North Mesa Street.

When officers approached, an individual exited from the passenger seat with his hands up and said, “I don’t have anything on me, I want no part of this,” the affidavit stated.

Anchondo, identified as the driver of the SUV, reportedly sped in an “obvious attempt to flee from the officers.”

While the officers stayed at the scene with the involved passenger, officers in another marked unit followed Anchondo onto Interstate 10, driving westbound.

The officers stated they lost visual of Anchondo as he drove over Loop 375 Transmountain Eastbound, towards the Northeast.

Officers reviewed video surveillance from the Circle K, but were unable to identify the defendant at the time.

An additional arrest affidavit stated that on Friday, April 17, officers were traveling westbound near the area of 730 Sunland Park Drive when they recognized the black Nissan Cube driving eastbound, near the intersection of South Mesa Hills Drive.

Officers reported that they followed the SUV and witnessed the vehicle quickly make a U-turn towards Sunland Park, speeding away.

The black SUV didn’t stop at a red traffic light and made another U-turn. Officers turned their traffic lights and sirens on as a chase ensued.

The affidavit stated that due to Anchondo’s erratic driving, officers stopped chasing after him and notified other officers of the SUV’s last known whereabouts.

The Texas Department of Public Safety Air Unit assisted in locating and following Anchondo to 1621 Lincoln Street in Anthony, New Mexico, where he was seen wearing a dark shirt and jeans walking out of the vehicle and into a residence.

Assistance from Sunland Park State Police, the Doña Ana Sheriff’s Office, Doña Ana SWAT Team, and the New Mexico State Police led to the arrest of Anchondo after a warrant was served, according to documents.

He was taken to the University Medical Center and later booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility with a bond amount set at $30,000.
