For three decades, Oscar-winning director Spike Lee has been the courtside face of the New York Knicks. Celebrities at basketball games are a common thing, especially in Los Angeles at Lakers games or in New York. But being a recurring face that people identify with the team’s game, like Lee at Madison Square Garden, is another level of celebrity fandom.
So, who should be the Spike Lee for the Houston Rockets?
We have no shortage of celebrities in Houston, both extremely local and legitimately world-famous. However, here are a couple of criteria they have to meet to be considered. Can they afford courtside seats, and would they actually care enough to show up? Other fans actually have to want them at the game. They have to be a welcome part of the ecosystem at the Toyota Center. You bought tickets, so you should expect to see the designated Houston celebrity there, sitting courtside. Also, franchise legends like Hakeem Olajuwon don’t count as their presence, especially in the playoffs, is expected and counted on already.

With that in mind, here are some nominations ranging from individuals who are more than worthy to some inspired choices that may be a tiny bit evil.
Paul Wall

Paul Wall is beloved in Houston and would be a welcome sight courtside at the Rockets game. He loves the Rockets, has appeared in the team’s promotions, and is performing at the playoff home opener this Friday. Of course, his patented diamond-encrusted grills would be a mainstay, with their glimmer picked up by the various television broadcasts that host NBA games. Paul Wall, as the Houston Spike Lee, has a nice ring to it, but it is also the most obvious choice.

Mattress Mack

Houston’s beloved gambling mattress magnate, Jim McIngvale, known far and wide as Mattress Mack, has been a low-key figure at Houston sporting events for years. He does gamble, mainly on football and college basketball teams, but he is beloved by Houstonians for his charitable works. The only concern is that the seats are courtside, which means it’s a real hazard. A few times a game, players fly into the crowd, hustling for loose balls. I shudder to think of what would happen to Mr. Mack, who is 75 years old, if he had to take the brunt of Rockets center Alperen Sengun falling on him.
Bun B

Bun B, rap icon and now owner-operator of Trill Burgers, is another solid choice. He is inextricable from Houston culture and has the wide appeal that would make him a regular figure at Rockets games makes sense. The only concern with the Trill Og is that his appearances would likely have to come with some sort of deal to feature Trill Burgers at Toyota Center. With renovations coming to the Rockets’ longtime home in 2027, that could be arranged. The burger spot is at every other sporting venue, so getting that monopoly settled is probably going to happen sooner rather than later.

Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion is probably the most sought-after celebrity that Houston fans would want to see courtside at Rockets home games. She is a rap star, fashion icon, perfect for the lights and cameras that are looking for stars at NBA games. The only problem is that she may not actually be a Rockets fan. She has been dating Dallas Maverick Klay Thompson, appearing at Mavs games throughout the year, which complicates things. The only way it works is if one, Thompson retired this summer, or two, Thompson somehow finds his way onto the Houston Rockets roster.
Travis Scott (excommunicado)
Travis Scott is one of Houston’s biggest celebrities and one of the biggest rappers in the world, but his sports allegiances are iffy. He is a frontrunner and a star chaser, and for the last few years, Houston hasn’t had a bona fide superstar until the arrival of Kevin Durant. Scott did show up to game one of the Rockets’ series against the Lakers last Saturday, sitting courtside to watch LeBron James turn back the clock, beating the Rockets in the process. Travis has had ample opportunity to be the Rockets guy and has passed up on it, to which I say good. The less Travis, the better.

Joel Osteen
What about Joel Osteen? Is he not a famous Houstonian, whom we all know? The pastor at Lakewood Church, which used to be the home of the Rockets, may be a controversial pick, but it is also a nomination that is just funny.
Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff coming back to her hometown to be the “Spike Lee” for the Rockets is an amazing thought exercise. This nomination is more of a plea for this to actually happen; it could shift the Rockets’ fortunes tremendously, having Lizzie McGuire courtside. What dreams are made of, truly.
