After about a year of wait and anticipation, a new national thrift chain is finally making its debut in San Antonio on Thursday, April 23. Excited fans of the California headquartered — but Miami founded — for-profit thrift chain have been chomping at the bit.
“They’re a huge hit in Florida. So glad we’re getting one,” Chuck Sattelberg said, alongside numerous comments brimming with excitement. That same day, another excited shopper said they visit a Red White & Blue Thrift Stores location in San Diego every time they visit their daughter.
It’s a welcome addition to a strong thrifting and secondhand shopping scene in San Antonio, where any given store is teeming with bargain hunters just about every day of the week. Of course, the big discount days draw the biggest crowds.
However, only a couple of major national brands have long dominated San Antonio’s thrifting scene. With Red White & Blue Thrift Stores operating nearly three dozen locations across 11 states, there’s hope its first foray into the Alamo City could and variety into the city’s secondhand market.
“Red White & Blue Thrift Stores have been a trusted destination for second-hand shopping for over 60 years, offering high-quality apparel, home furnishings, and more at affordable prices,” a spokesperson told MySA on behalf of the company that deems itself the “best thrift store in the USA.”
With the company saying it puts out 10,000 new items daily, that’s a lot of new preloved inventory hitting San Antonio shelves pretty quickly. Though, there’s a bit of a cash catch. The new digs will be cash only — a fact met with varying levels of anger and indifference.
While Yolonda Padilla seemed bothered, saying nobody carries cash around anymore, others dismissed this payment decision. In fact, some seem to prefer it.
“I will still go. Cash in hand. Would rather pay cash than get charged the additional fee some businesses are charging,” Stephanie Clark said.
The company told MySA the cash-only policy was intended to keep prices as low as possible. When asked how much to bring, the Red White & Blue Thrift marketing coordinator advised shoppers to “come prepared.” An ATM will also be available on site for anyone who underestimates their haul.
