Lubbock Police Department investigating vandalism at Lubbock Lake Landmark

  • October 29, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock Police Department is investigating what’s believed to be about $10,000 worth of damage, suspected to be vandalism at the Lubbock Lake Landmark.

Joseph Pitts, the operations manager, said the act has caused the one ADA accessible trail, known as the Wild Flower trail, to be temporarily closed.

“At the moment with all the boards ripped up and the signs on the ground, it’s just a safety hazard for the visitors, so that’s why we chose to close it,” Pitts said. “The other trails are still open to the public we just ask the that the public please stay off of the Wild Flower trail out of respect for our wishes and their safety most importantly.”

Searching the site, LPD discovered a damaged car on the northwestern side of the property, leading Pitts to believe someone had drove through the site.

“I believe they did a couple of loops on the trail,” Pitts said. “There are several boards that have been ripped up, destroyed, they ran over three of our information text panels completely uprooted, twisted them.”

Pitts knows the community loves the site and the trails just as much as he and his team does, and that’s why he asks the public to do its best to help keep the place beautiful.

“If you’re walking our trails and see something that is suspicious, please give us a call,” Pitts said. “We only have three employees that maintain these acres and these trails so it’s a challenge and requires some priority so any help we can get from the public in that aspect, we’re very grateful.”

Whether you love history or are just looking for a peaceful hike, Pitts said the Lubbock Lake Landmark is here to serve and hopes to do so for years to come.

Pitts said anyone wanting to help with the rebuilding process of the trail, can donate monetarily or volunteer by going to the historical landmark in person.
