AUSTIN, Texas — City of Austin officials said the governor has extended a deadline for the city to revise a police policy related to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott told city leaders that the Austin Police Department’s (APD) policy on handling ICE administrative warrants violates state law. He had ordered changes by Thursday, April 23, or the city could lose $2.5 million in public safety grants.

City officials said Thursday evening they hope to reach a resolution in the coming days.
