A shop that blends coffee with greenery is expanding its North Texas footprint. Habitat Plants + Coffee is set to open a new location in Plano, adding another space where customers can sip a latte while browsing houseplants and supplies.

The new shop will be located at 4817 W. Park Blvd., Ste. 815, offering coffee, tea and a retail mix that includes live plants, planters, apparel and other goods.

How Habitat Came To Be

Habitat first opened in downtown McKinney in 2021 at 214 N. Kentucky St., where it quickly found an audience among locals looking for something more than a traditional coffee shop. Earlier this year, that original location expanded, signaling steady demand for the concept.

The Plano location marks the next step, bringing the same mix of café and plant shop closer to a larger stretch of North Texas customers.

As Local Profile previously reported, Founder and Owner Karina Velez traces the business idea back to time spent living in New York, where she began thinking more seriously about what she wanted to build.

“I began thinking about what had been consistent in my life since I left home, and it was plants,” Karina explained. “It was my dream job [to work in plants and coffee] and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”

That realization eventually turned into a business idea — one shaped by both her interest in plants and a desire to create a more casual, welcoming space for others who shared it.

Filling A Gap In The Community

Before opening Habitat, Karina noticed something missing in her own community. While plant care had grown into a personal hobby, there wasn’t a dedicated, approachable space in McKinney where people could gather, shop and ask questions.

What started as a small idea turned into a hands-on project. After spotting an open storefront while walking her dog in downtown McKinney, Karina spent months working through business plans, sourcing plants and building out the space before opening in July 2021.

A Space Built Around Plants (And Coffee)

The concept remains simple: a place where customers can browse plants at their own pace, pick up supplies and settle in with a drink. It’s part retail, part café and part gathering spot for people who enjoy having a little more green in their daily routine.

With the upcoming Plano location, Habitat Plants + Coffee is extending that same experience into a new neighborhood, one that continues to grow its mix of independent shops and community-driven spaces.
