With its playoff lives hanging in the balance, Plano East’s baseball team turned to junior Kellan McWhinnie, and he delivered a masterpiece.
McWhinnie held a potent Allen offense just one run on three hits with four strikeouts over seven solid innings. Unfortunately, the Panthers couldn’t break through on the scoreboard in a 1-0 loss to the Eagles on Wednesday.
The only run of the game came on an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.
Plano East attempted to mount rallies during the sixth and seventh innings. The Panthers had two on with two outs in the sixth after a walk was issued to Matthew Hyman, but a ground-out ended the threat. Then, in the seventh, Xavien Salas singled on a ground ball to right field, putting runners at first and second with two outs. However, a grounder ended the inning and the game.
Plano East fell to 7-8 in District 6-6A. With the loss and a win by McKinney Boyd (9-6 in district), the Panthers were eliminated from playoff contention. Plano East will look to finish the season with a win over Allen. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Naaman Forest High School.
