The fun has finally arrived. Over a decade since his last Lubbock performance, George Strait, the “King of Country,” is performing back-to-back shows at Texas Tech’s Jones AT&T Stadium on Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25. For fans visiting from San Antonio, who opted to drive instead of fly, you won’t have to worry about traveling 500 miles to get to “Amarillo by Morning,” but you do have a 400-mile drive to look forward to.
So, when you’re traveling “up from San Antone,” here’s how to make the most of your George Strait road trip.
You’ll start the journey by heading up Interstate 10 and passing through Boerne. If you need an early pit stop, peruse the many shops on Main Street, stop in for a drink at Cibolo Creek Brewing or load up on breakfast with a giant cinnamon roll from the Richter.
Hitting Comfort, you’ll be able to enjoy the sights of the Texas Hill Country as you bypass Kerrville or Texas Wine Country. However, if you want an excursion, be sure and visit Stonehenge II and be transported back in time. Jewelry enthusiasts can also visit the birthplace of James Avery Artisan Jewelry, which still calls Kerrville home.
Driving through “Miles and Miles of Texas,” you’ll eventually turn onto US 83 at Junction. Of course, Texas A&M football fans can also see the historic site where the “Junction Boys” trained under head coach Bear Bryant.
US 83 will bypass San Angelo and instead cut through the towns of Menard, Eden and Ballinger. There’s not much to see on this stretch, so we recommend powering through to Sweetwater. Taking a break before hitting the road, folks can stop by for barbecue at Blackland Smokehouse or stop in for a beer and book at Argos Brewhouse & Bookseller.
Bypassing Abilene and Colorado City, you’ll then pass through Snyder and Post. If you’re hoping to see where they filmed Hell or High Water, you’re out of luck, as the Taylor Sheridan-written thriller was filmed in New Mexico, sad face. But fear not cause now you’re in the home stretch.
US 84 will take you all the way to Lubbock, and from there you’ll make your way to Jones AT&T Stadium at 2526 Mac Davis Lane, Lubbock, TX 79407. Without stopping, you’re looking at a six-hour drive. But make sure you’ve got those George Strait tickets secured before you hit the road. We’d hate for you to drive 400 miles and realize the tickets were fake.
