The future of the region’s rapid transit system could take a major hit when the Plano City Council holds a special session next week to consider a ballot measure to withdraw from Dallas Area Rapid Transit.
If the council decides to hold a special election, Plano voters would decide next year whether to withdraw from DART and switch to alternative transit options.
On Saturday, the transit system launched its Silver Line, a 10-stop route between DFW International Airport’s Terminal B and its new Shiloh Road Station in Plano.
The Silver Line’s opening came as the transit agency negotiates with member cities over service and funding.
Breaking News
Mayors of several North Texas cities, including Plano Mayor John Muns, asked Gov. Greg Abbott earlier this year to consider legislation to change DART’s funding and governing structure, citing concerns over service and its value to residents. The bills failed to reach the floor for a vote.
“As Plano continues to grow, our community’s needs are evolving,” said City Manager Mark Israelson in a statement. “We need transit solutions that evolve with us to provide flexible and responsive options for everyone who lives and works in Plano.”
The Plano City Council will hold a special session on Wednesday, November 5, at 5 p.m. to consider holding the election.
