FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas — Two people were arrested after a high-speed chase through Fayette County ended in a restaurant parking lot early Wednesday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

A Fayette County deputy initiated a traffic stop around 2:30 a.m. on a speeding vehicle headed westbound on I-10 near Schulenburg. The driver refused to yield and accelerated past 100 mph.

A Flatonia Police Department sergeant used spike strips that punctured all four tires of the suspect vehicle. The car exited the interstate in Flatonia and continued on two flat tires and two bare rims before stopping in a restaurant parking lot along the frontage road.

Both occupants fled on foot into a wooded area behind the business.

The passenger, Jade Smith, 18, of New Mexico, was apprehended almost immediately but resisted arrest. The driver, Tyrese Mitchell, 26, of San Antonio, hid in thick brush before officers located him minutes later. He also resisted arrest.

Mitchell told officers he fled because his driver’s license was suspended. A search of the vehicle turned up no illegal substances.

Mitchell was medically cleared at a local hospital before being transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center in La Grange. He was charged with evading arrest or detention with a motor vehicle and resisting arrest, search or transportation.
