Texas Department of Transportation crews will close the flyovers from northbound and southbound Interstate 35 to eastbound U.S. 290 East in North Austin this weekend to continue repairs on bridge joints that have sparked concern among drivers in recent months. The closures will start Friday at 9 p.m., and the bridges will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, the department said.
In the meantime, drivers will exit at RM 2222 west and turn at the light to access eastbound U.S. 290. Crews will post detour signs, and drivers should expect traffic delays, TxDOT said.
Repairs on the bridge joints have been ongoing since early March following a wave of social media attention on the flyovers. A February viral video appeared to show a large gap in the roadway surface at one of the joints in the northbound-to-eastbound flyover.
At the time, TxDOT said the bridges were structurally sound and revealed it had been planning to repair the joints for years. The department awarded a $768,000 bid for the project in 2025.
“TxDOT has been monitoring bearing pads and joints for several years to ensure structural integrity was not compromised,” the agency said in March. “The bridge joints are designed to expand and contract, and, in this case, they have expanded beyond the intended design.”
