HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Two people were rushed to the hospital, and several were treated at the scene following an apartment fire in west Houston, according to the Houston Fire Department.

Firefighters were called shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning to the 11200 block of Olympia Drive for an apartment complex fire, HFD said.

HFD Senior Captain Reyes said that before firefighters arrived, two people had jumped out of a second-story window. He added that the apartment’s maintenance crew put a couch on the ground to cushion their fall.

“We also assisted two other people when we got out here,” Capt. Reyes said.

Sixteen apartment units were affected by the fire, and the building they shared appears to be a total loss, HFD said. They added that arson investigators arrived at the complex to determine the source of the fire.

Capt. Reyes said that the strong winds in the area were a factor in the fire’s growth. “Wind picked up a little bit, yes, it did become a factor as part of the fire,” Capt. Reyes said.

HFD said the residents displaced by the fire are being assisted by the apartment complex’s management and the American Red Cross.
