As the family was getting into the car, the boy slipped away from his parents and ran out into the apartment’s road, the Houston Police Department said.

HOUSTON — A 1-year-old boy died after he slipped away from his parents, who were loading up their vehicle, and was hit by a car Friday night at an apartment complex in Houston.

The Houston Police Department said the boy got away from his parents and ran into the road while his family was getting into their car.

That’s when police said a security guard who was patrolling the complex hit the boy with his car.

Police said the guard and the boy’s father immediately called 911 and started emergency first aid before deciding to try and rush the boy to the hospital.

By the time they loaded the child into the guard’s car and got to the front of the apartment complex, first responders had arrived.

The boy was then rushed to an area hospital, where he ultimately died from his injuries.

The security guard reportedly stayed at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators, according to police. Authorities said no charges were filed Friday night, but the investigation is ongoing.

“Preliminary investigation just shows tonight this is a terrible accident,” Houston police Sgt. Thomas Fendia said.
