An event celebrating Mexican heritage through the tradition of charrería helped usher Fiesta 2026 to a close Sunday.
“A Day in Old Mexico,” presented by the San Antonio Charro Association, showcased charros (horsemen) and escaramuzas (female equestrian), as well as folklórico dancers, music and food in a family-friendly atmosphere. Charrería is considered the national sport of Mexico and a forerunner of the North American rodeo.
An official Fiesta event for over six decades, “A Day in Old Mexico” typically draws thousands to the daylong event. It has traditionally been held the two Sundays during the 11-day Fiesta.
Marking its 135th anniversary this year, Fiesta is often called a “party with a purpose” because of its fundraising component. Fiesta was first held in 1891 with a single parade – the Battle of Flowers honoring the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of Jacinto.
