A $4.6 million rehabilitation of the zoo’s rhino exhibit is underway, according to a recent filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration. While details submitted to the TDLR are subject to change, construction could wrap up this November.
Improvements are underway for the existing rhino exhibit and guest viewing areas, including modifications to habitat features, barriers, hardscape and drainage all to support animal welfare, safety and accessibility, according to the filing. In total, the project encompasses more than 215,000 square feet.
The Houston Zoo did not immediately respond to Chron’s request for comment by the time of publication.
“More shade for animals and guests, including a covered viewing shelter, will allow visitors to get even closer to the white rhinoceros and zebras,” the website reads. “New animal care features will include heaters, fans and feeders, and a new water feature will support animal health while encouraging natural behaviors of the African species.”
The upgrades are part of a broader, multi-year African habitat overhaul launched in January 2026. The Houston Zoo is also planning improvements to the McGovern Giraffe Habitat and the Shani Market. Phased openings are expected throughout 2026 and ’27.
