Musk has claimed production of the vehicle will move much faster than a standard car manufacturing line and could produce a Cybercab every 5 seconds.

AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla is ramping up hiring for its highly anticipated Cybercab.

The Austin-based automaker posted at least 30 new positions tied to the two-seater robotaxi’s production.

Most jobs focus on manufacturing, including technicians for drive units, battery packs and assembly lines. All positions are in Austin, suggesting production will happen at Tesla’s Gigafactory near the airport.

It comes after CEO Elon Musk told investors the company will begin “volume production” of the autonomous vehicle in 2026.

The company told investors this year it was preparing for Cybercab production, which will be done using the “unboxed” manufacturing system, where the cars’ major parts are built in parallel before final assembly.

According to a report from KVUE’s media partners at the Austin American-Statesman, Tesla is aiming for an annual production rate of 2 million units. Musk has claimed production of the vehicle will move much faster than a standard car manufacturing line and could produce a Cybercab every 5 seconds.

The Tesla CEO said the Cybercab would not have control pedals or a steering wheel and instead function as a fully autonomous vehicle. But in recent days, company officials have said it may come with a steering wheel and pedals after all, as a way to appeal to a wider customer base.

Tesla rolled out its Robotaxi ride-hailing service in Austin earlier this year to concerns over safety with its self-driving system. The service currently operates with safety monitors in the front passenger seat, which Musk said will be removed by the end of 2025.
