Dallas’ own Deep Vellum Bookstore and Publishing Co. has been named by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the best independent bookstores in America.
The magazine released its roundup of 20 standout shops in recognition of National Independent Bookstore Day on April 25.
Deep Vellum’s publishing arm is renowned for its translations of contemporary global literature, including Romanian novelist Mircea Cărtărescu’s Solenoid, which earned a spot on the longlist of the International Booker Prize in 2025.
“As esoteric as its collection may seem, the bookstore itself makes exploration approachable,” writes Condé Nast editorial assistant Kat Chen. “Crack into a can of craft beer, gaze at the wall plastered with Polaroids of smiling patrons, and tuck into an engrossing read on one of the tweed armchairs.”
In addition to stocking all of its own publications, Deep Vellum offers a curated selection of literary fiction, nonfiction and poetry. The store, at 3000 Commerce St. in Deep Ellum, is open daily from noon to 6 p.m.
