People often say that the dating scene in Houston is difficult for several reasons. There is the challenge of finding someone within a compatible age range, the heavy reliance on dating apps, and the reality that many people seem too busy or introverted to date.

In my own dating journey, I have discovered organizations and events that bring singles together in Houston. Many of these happen monthly or seasonally, especially around Valentine’s Day, and they are easy to find through social media platforms like Instagram. Some of the events I attended were not successful in terms of finding a match due to age differences, but I still gained valuable experiences. I learned how to handle rejection and built connections outside my university.

Recently, I attended another singles event with the goal of writing about it and sharing the experience. This event was hosted by Houston Hotspots at Axelrad, a place I had written about before. It was called Glitch A Night, where friends present singles through slideshow presentations and attendees can play retro video games afterward.

When I arrived, it was still bright outside, but the energy was already building. Axelrad maintained its usual welcoming atmosphere, with live music, games, and a relaxed crowd. Compared to previous events I attended, the turnout was larger and more balanced, with a noticeable mix of men and women. That alone made the experience feel more promising.

The presentations were detailed and entertaining. Friends shared information about each participant, including their interests, personalities, and backgrounds. Some talked about hobbies like gaming and traveling, while others shared career highlights and personal traits. It made it easier to understand what kind of partner each person was looking for.

What stood out most was how open people were about their preferences and even their red flags. These included things like age ranges, habits, and lifestyle choices. While no one is perfect, this honesty made it easier to understand who you might connect with. It showed that being upfront does not have to be a negative thing.

As someone who enjoys music and video games, I found it easy to relate to the crowd. Many attendees shared similar interests, and no one felt out of place. From my experience, the people there felt genuine and approachable.

At the end of each presentation, participants shared their social media handles so others could reach out or connect during the event.

The format itself made the event enjoyable. It felt more personal and creative compared to traditional dating methods. Being at a place like Axelrad also encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and engage with a more social environment. These events are not just about dating, but also about exploring the city and meeting new people.

I attended the event alone, as my friends were busy, but I still managed to connect with others. I approached a pair of friends and started a conversation. One of them was visiting Axelrad for the first time, and both were there hoping to meet someone. We talked about their careers in the medical field, their backgrounds, and even shared advice related to my photography interests.

It turned out to be one of the best conversations I have had at a social event. It also reinforced something important. Approaching people works. I used to be very introverted and hesitant to talk to strangers, but I have learned that most people are open and kind.

Later, another person joined our conversation, and we welcomed him in. He was a refinery engineer, an experienced traveler, and originally from Colombia. I even had the chance to speak Spanish, which helped me feel more connected to my culture.

At that point, I realized this was one of the most enjoyable events I had attended. It was fun, engaging, and filled with positive interactions. The mix of dating and retro games created a relaxed and friendly environment.

So, did I find a match?

No.

But that does not mean the experience was unsuccessful. I left with one of my favorite memories from a social event and made three new friends who were genuinely kind. It reminded me that building connections is just as valuable as finding a partner.

One piece of advice I received that night stood out to me. Be genuine, stay true to yourself, and trust that the right time will come. Focus on improving yourself and becoming the person you want to be.

If you are struggling with dating, you are not alone. I have experienced those challenges too. The best thing you can do is continue putting yourself out there and building meaningful connections. Do not focus too much on finding the right person immediately. Instead, focus on creating friendships and expanding your social circle.

For me, the goal is simple. Make people feel welcome and bring positive energy into every interaction. When you do that, connections come naturally, and you never know where they might lead.
