LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Over the decades, CASA of the South Plains has been a voice for children who suffer abuse and neglect.
The problem hits home for some involved in the organization itself, including Tabitha Rendon. Rendon entered the foster care system when she was 8 years old and had her life changed a few years later.
“I received the gift of a CASA volunteer,” Rendon said, “and so that was a vital part of my life and has given me the opportunities that I could never have expected.”
CASA of the South Plains currently serves around 55% of the children in foster care in across six counties. That includes serving 374 children through 222 volunteers in 2025.
The organization is committed to ensuring better futures for children, but Rendon says each case is different.
“Some cases could have one child, some cases could have a sibling group,” Rendon said, “so it’s not necessarily to say 100 volunteers would serve the difference, but if we could have 30 people who say yes to volunteering, that marker would move tremendously.”
That’s why fundraisers such as Casas for CASA mean so much to the organization’s mission. Buying even one $5 ticket allows the nonprofit to make sure no child is left behind.
“The hope and the dream is to serve every single child that is in foster care that is part of our community,” Rendon said, “and so every single dollar and volunteer will help us move that mark.”
Potential volunteers can sign up to take part in a CASA 101 information session where they’ll learn how to make a difference in a child’s life.
“It’s very special to me to be able to give back to the missions and organizations and the people who invested in me,” Rendon said, “and then also now, I get to be the professional who’s there for children who are experiencing this right now.”
Rendon had an advocate stand up for her all those years ago and now gets to be on the other side of the table, giving back, the best way she knows how.
