AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sent a second letter to Austin ISD after a complaint alleged a transgender student used a girls’ restroom at a UIL competition.
The letter, dated April 24, notifies the district of an alleged violation that occurred on or about April 2 at the AISD Performing Arts Center during a University Interscholastic League competition. According to Paxton’s office, the incident involved the same student who was the subject of an earlier complaint filed in January by an Austin High School parent.
Paxton said a parent filed a formal complaint with the attorney general’s office alleging a transgender student had been using female restrooms and private spaces at Austin High School. Paxton’s office first contacted AISD in March.
In his latest letter, Paxton said the new alleged violation suggests AISD’s efforts to resolve the matter were inconsistent across facilities.
“It is appalling that Austin ISD officials won’t do what is required by law to protect girls’ privacy and safety,” Paxton said in a statement.
The attorney general is demanding the district provide copies of its SB 8 compliance policies, records of all formal complaints related to the law, documentation of any conferences held with the student and their parents, and an account of steps being taken to prevent future violations.
