COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – College Station leaders are considering new on-street parking restrictions on several South Side streets near Texas A&M, citing concerns about traffic flow and emergency access on older, narrower roadways.
City staff hosted a public meeting at College Station City Hall on Monday to take questions and gather feedback on proposed “no parking” areas. The meeting was held before any ordinance was drafted and taken to the College Station City Council for possible approval.
Randell Smith, the city’s senior traffic engineer, said the proposal follows concerns from residents as well as internal concerns raised by the College Station Fire Department.
“We received some internal concerns from our fire department, mostly showing that we have some emergency access issues,” Smith said.
Safety concerns raised by neighbors
Some residents told city staff that even one parked car on a narrow street can force drivers to move into oncoming traffic, especially around curves or where sightlines are limited.
“As long as there’s a car parked in the street, it takes up a lane. You have to go around that car and out into oncoming traffic,” said Katherine Edwards, who lives in the area. “Safety is definitely key.”
Student-heavy area near campus
The streets under discussion sit in a neighborhood close to campus, where many homes are rentals. Residents and visitors say curbside parking is often used as overflow when driveways are small or already full.
Texas A&M junior Ellie Schneider, who visits her boyfriend’s house in the area, said losing curbside parking could create challenges for roommates and visitors.
“The driveways in this neighborhood don’t offer a lot of parking, either he or his brother will have to park in the street anyway,” Schneider said. “It would make it challenging if they just completely took off all of this parking for sure.”

Parking and congestion in neighborhoods around Texas A&M, particularly in the South Side, have been a recurring topic at city meetings, with leaders previously discussing a range of tools, including permits, time limits, and other restrictions.
City staff said they will review feedback from the meeting, refine the proposal, and then decide whether to move forward with a parking ordinance to the College Station City Council.
Smith said that step could come weeks or even months down the road.
